Ruthven Plantation

farmhouse

Ruthven (pronounced "riven", almost like "river") is the name of a Scottish Clan. Our homestead is named Ruthven Plantation, after that Clan and the Ruthven family that first settled in Colonial America... and yes, that's Laura's ancestory. Originally established by the Arthur family in 1827, we purchased the farm in early 2007 after searching over seven years for just the right place. Ruthven Plantation is Laura's passion. Having felt compelled for some years to buy a farm, grow wildflowers, and start a business of her own... Ruthven is a dream... a divine calling... maybe just a little of both.

Laura, Jay and Emily Our small, family operation consists primarily of husband and wife, Jay and Laura. Baby Emily isn't old enough to work the fields or make products yet, but she is a very happy baby and very good at keeping our morale high. We have a house cat, Maggie who is a big white Maine Coon and a house dog, Bella who is a loveable red-tri Australian Shephard. Neither one of them could be called "working animals", though they are both constantly under foot. Bella keeps the squirrels treed, while Maggie simply supervises all our activities. Our barn cat, Sarsaparilla (aka Sassy) is a world class mouser and found heaven when she moved here. There are also several Pearl Guinneas and a bunch of Black Australorp laying hens that help keep the bug population under control.

foothills

We live on-site in the old (but modernized!) farmhouse amid 75 acres in a rolling, pastoral setting with beautiful views of the surrounding foothills, scattered areas of natural woodland, a stocked pond, a bold creek, and two small branches. This is quite simply a great place to raise our family and to pursue our dreams. We are truly blessed!

Our mission on the farm is to promote hope and happiness through environmentally conscious production and marketing of the finest quality cut flowers and related botanical products, in a professional way that complements and supports the local culture and history of our community.

Quality and reliability are among our top goals. Though not officially certified organic, the farm has been managed with sustainable practices since at least 10 years before we arrived. We faithfully continue to employ organic and sustainable farming practices today… very much like our forefathers did in their time. We respect our environment and strive to be good stewards of the resources entrusted to us. We actively partner with others who share these same values.

Why flowers? In short, because flowers always make people feel better. They are positive, they are beautiful, they usually smell nice, and they make people smile... Throughout history, flowers have helped celebrate special events, recognize accomplishments, console the greiving, express love and affection. The world is so full of negativity. Laura chooses to believe that it's possible to turn that around and make a positive difference in people's lives... with flowers.

For with God nothing is ever impossible
and no word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment
